Mark Immortell is the owner and head director of the Municipal Theatre. His direct influence upon events is very small, but many of the residents of the Town-on-Gorkhon believe that in fact it is he who controls what happens in the city through superstition, though there is no direct evidence that this is correct.

Description

Appearance: Athletically built midget, a former circus performer. He has a proud posture which is the result of the spinal injury which led to his retirement from circus. A huge scar cuts across his chest, reaching his left scapula. He has a striking Roman nose with the tip facing downwards. Usually there’s a haughty smile on his face. A dandy. Mark holds himself with grace and dresses sharply. He carries a heavy walking cane.

Pose: Striding with pride.

Personality: This man used to be one of the best circus performers, but as the result of his severe injury he had to withdraw from the circus. Accompanied by a partner, he later was in charge of a troop and conceived a plan of creating a grandiose show. Mark started gathering a unique troop made from former cripples who through the sheer force of will continued to train and amaze the audience by showing them the impossible. Following the success of the “Freak Show”, Mark’s partner betrayed him and injured his spine once more. He left Mark to die by the hedge and took the troop with himself. The old Burakh helped Immortell recover, but Mark isn’t aware of it. In the town Mark profits from different things: he teaches people the art of conjuring and gambling.

From original Pathologic character concepts [1]

Arrogant, whimsical, and often philosophical, Mark Immortell is the lead director of the Municipal Theatre, in the Spin-a-Yarn Square. His performances are known for being mysterious, and allegedly can predict the future; something that Andrey Stamatin loathes, claiming it disrespects the work and memory of Nina Kaina. His productions vary from mime performances to entire plays, and sometimes even magic shows. Children are not permitted to watch his performances.

Mark lacks any kind of social life, but seems to be in the good graces of Maria Kaina, likely due to their shared ideology.

Background

Very little is known about Mark Immortell before he came to Town; he used to be a performer, but after the fall of the Ace of Diamonds Caravan, most of society turned their back on circus performers, and Mark was forced to leave the Capital.[2] According to his design documents, Mark had his own troupe of disabled performers, but was betrayed in some way by his supposed business partner, leaving him for dead. Isidor Burakh found Mark and helped him recover, but it seems Mark is unaware of this.

Appearance

Mark has short strawberry blond hair and green eyes. He wears a purple pinstripe suit with several chains over a wine coloured vest, and what appears to be a green collared shirt underneath. Several chains hang off of his vest and appear to hold on to his suit jacket. His coat trails down to his white wing tip shoes. His cane has a gem-like handle, yet is otherwise plain.

Portrait Quotes

LaraHDportrait.jpg "I think it's the Masks who play him and not the other way around. This Theatre generally gives me a dark vibe... I can't really put it into words. It's not a theatre, but rather a well pretending to be one. It's intimidating. Also, Mark's mime shows seem to incorporate us too... everyone's playing along to avoid disrupting the performance, and that's exactly how he's manipulating us."

- Lara Ravel's take on him.
MariaHDportrait.jpg "He makes me anxious; his performances don't show a person's fate, they impose it. I'd really like to see someone grab and pull the puppeteer's strings. Or maybe we ought to loop the whole thing, offering the strings to the people at the very bottom? That would be funny... All in all, one day I shall tame this crafty imp—no matter what it takes."

- Maria Kaina's take on him.

Plot

Bachelor Route

On Day 10, Mark requests the Bachelor's presence at the Theatre. He warns the Bachelor of a commotion at the Bone Stake Lot and suggests the Bachelor should investigate it. The Bachelor discovers that a large crowd is gathering at the Lot and several people appear to be on the verge of rioting. He returns to Mark and the two decide to seek the help of Alexander Block.

On Day 12, as the Bachelor walks around Town and says goodbye and fair wishes to his Utopian allies, he speaks critically to Mark, declaring that if he could, he would have let the man die. The conversation with Mark is notably more meta, as it seems Mark is directly addressing the actions of both Bachelor and the player. Even the Bachelor notes how there is an otherworldly presence around Mark.

Haruspex Route

While the Haruspex occasionally visits the Theatre, he never speaks to Mark Immortell directly for any main quest.

Changeling Route

If the Changeling attempts to speak to Mark in his Theatre, he will demand that she leave, as she is an unwanted guest.

On Day 4, Katerina Saburova asks the Changeling to tell Mark not to allow the Theatre to be turned into a hospital, as well as to lead him away from Utopian ideology. When the Changeling visits the Theatre, she finds that it is locked and Mark is not there. The Executors standing by the door tell her that Mark has gone to see Maria Kaina. Though she puts on a brave face, the Changeling is mocked and put down by both Maria and Mark, clearly not taking her seriously. Mark will tell the Changeling that if she insists on trusting Katerina, she ought to know the truth about her visions. He sends her back to the Theatre with instructions on how to enter, and the Changeling discovers the existence of the Rat Prophet.

Notes

  • In the original 2005 English translation of the game, his name was written as "Mark Immortal".
  • Mark is the only character in the game who uses a cane, which he has used since a spinal injury that forced him to leave the circus.
  • Mark's surname, Immortell (Бессмертник), is similar to the plant Helichrysum italicum, known as immortelle[3] (also known as 'everlasting') and is spelled the same in Russian[4]. It also resembles the title of the folkloric villain Koschei, called "the Deathless" (Кощей Бессмертный).[5]
  • Mark will never fall ill, even when the player fails a main quest objective on the Bachelor Route. He will also never fall ill on Day 11 for other healers to ensure that the Bachelor will be present during the Cathedral meeting.
